Touched Reality While Studying

Today I want to do a quick blog on some enlightenment I got while doing some reading on how organizations can connect business strategies to IT projects.

I was reading an article on CIO.com titled “Aligning IT project and business strategies: why you should and how you can” that talks about aligning projects to business strategies for a higher success of projects. I stumbled upon one point which states that its important to make it clear to all team members what their individual strategic role will be:

Being clear with every member of your IT project management team about where they fit into that vision and how their work will contribute can deliver massive returns and not just in business terms, but morale and cultural cohesion can also benefit.”

This quote truly resonates with me because, up until now, as a software engineer I’ve always been on the non-managerial side of things and even though I understood what had to be executed, it was never made clear to me how much of an impact my role would have in a project. To me this always felt like I’m just a cog in a system. For me, and I guess for many, being just a cog in the system kills passion and ambition.

I find it fascinating to finally be able to put this observation into a ‘mental box’ called ‘ambiguity of one’s impact or contribution to a project.’. Also, this is clearly a point which, from now on, I can bring up in meetings at work. I can now say to my managers that 1) this point exists, 2) it is also an important aspect of executing a project with a higher chance of success and 3) shouldn’t be neglected.

I feel like I’m slowly but surely starting to understand some of the things around me that I experienced so far as a professional, which is the very reason why I started the master programme in IT Project Management!

Exciting times!
